The City of Independence announced on May 6 that a section of 17th Street SE will be closed from Monday, May 11 at approximately 7:00 AM until Tuesday, May 12 at approximately 7:00 AM to allow utility crews to perform necessary sewer repairs and concrete patching.

The closure will affect the area between Norby’s and Dollar Tree, where no traffic will be permitted through the immediate work zone. Local traffic will still be able to access properties along the corridor up to the impacted area, but all through traffic must use a designated detour route.

According to city officials, eastbound drivers will be rerouted south onto Highway 150, east onto Enterprise Drive, and north onto Larson Lane before returning to 17th Street SE. Westbound drivers should follow Larson Lane south, Enterprise Drive west, and Highway 150 north back toward their destination on 17th Street SE.

The city is asking residents for patience during this period. “We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to maintain and improve our city infrastructure. Please follow all posted signage and drive safely in the area,” officials said in a statement.

The closure is part of ongoing efforts by utility crews to address infrastructure needs within Independence.
