Tony Morfitt, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Cedar Rapids, has been promoted to Colonel in the Air Force and Iowa Air National Guard as of January 31, 2026. Morfitt has worked with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa since 2010.

In his current military role, Colonel Morfitt serves as the State Staff Judge Advocate at Joint Forces Headquarters in Johnston, Iowa. This position makes him the senior attorney for the Iowa Air National Guard, which includes seven other attorneys stationed in Des Moines and Sioux City.

United States Attorney Leif Olson commented on Morfitt’s promotion: “This promotion is evidence of the commitment to duty, leadership, and public service that Tony has exhibited throughout his career,” Olson said. “As both an AUSA and a member of the military, he has served our nation with honor and distinction. The USAO is proud to have him as a member of our team.”

Morfitt began his military career after graduating from the University of Iowa College of Law with high distinction and membership in the Order of the Coif. He joined the Air Force and served more than four years on active duty as trial counsel in over 20 trials before joining the Air Force Reserves.

In 2014, Morfitt became part of the 132d Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard. The unit conducts missions worldwide involving remotely piloted aircraft, cybersecurity operations, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and surveillance. As legal advisor to commanders, Morfitt provided guidance on issues such as military justice and cyber law. He played a significant role in establishing the 168th Cyber Operations Squadron by offering legal advice on emerging cyber law topics and helped support state cybersecurity during the 2020 elections.

Colonel Morfitt’s service has been recognized with several awards: two Meritorious Service Medals, three Air and Space Commendation Medals, eight Air and Space Outstanding Unit Awards, and two Air and Space Longevity Service Awards. He is also a graduate of both the Air War College and Air Command and Staff College.
