Iowa State University Extension and Outreach announced on April 17 that it will offer a Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA) Preventive Controls for Human Food Version 2.0 course for food processors and those responsible for food safety plans. The training will be held in two formats: an in-person session from June 2 to June 4, and a hybrid option with online coursework followed by an instructor-led session on September 17.

The course is designed to help participants meet the Food and Drug Administration’s requirement to become a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI). This recognition equips attendees with knowledge of hazard analysis, risk-based preventive controls, and current good manufacturing practices necessary under the Preventive Controls for Human Food rule. According to organizers, PCQI is not a certification program but provides essential skills needed for compliance.

“The FSCPA Preventive Controls for Human Food 2.0 course is a new version, so it’s a great opportunity for food processors to meet PCQI requirements and hear updated information,” said Hansen. “Also, many trainings are only available virtually, so having an in-person option is a big benefit, and we’re excited to be offering it.”

Participants must register online. The fee is $700 per person for the three-day in-person format or $400 per person for the hybrid format. Seats are limited, and early registration is encouraged. The Food Innovation Business Hub can also deliver customized training at individual facilities.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach receives funding through county taxes, state appropriations, and federal contributions via cooperative agreements according to the official website. It promotes community empowerment by connecting Iowans with university expertise according to the official website. The organization uses facilities at Iowa State University in Ames as well as 100 county offices across Iowa according to the official website. As part of Iowa State University itself according to the official website, Extension employs about 870 faculty and staff members statewide according to the official website.

Extension focuses on involving all Iowans in research, education, and outreach initiatives aimed at addressing everyday challenges while fostering development throughout Iowa according to the official website.
