Governor Kim Reynolds signed a series of bills into law on May 6, covering topics such as emergency protective orders, dental sedation permits, student loan information, child abuse definitions, child endangerment, professional safety for judicial officials, digital financial kiosks regulations, and victim protections.
These new laws are intended to address a range of issues affecting Iowa residents. The measures include provisions to help peace officers file emergency protective orders for domestic abuse victims and clarify what constitutes child abuse in cases involving access to behavioral or mental health treatment.
The legislation signed includes HF 523 concerning peace officers’ ability to file petitions for emergency protective orders; HF 648 establishing a licensed sedation provider host permit for dentists; HF 703 addressing state and federal student loan program information; HF 2256 exempting certain situations from the definition of child abuse; and HF 2360 relating to child endangerment. Additional bills are SF 2280 regarding safety measures for members of the general assembly and judicial system professionals—including new criminal offenses related to threats and sharing personal information—SF 2296 regulating digital financial kiosks with updated civil penalties; and SF 2379 expanding victim protections including rights for sexual abuse victims and changes related to restitution.
According to the official website, notable personnel in the Iowa Governor’s office include Governor Reynolds and Lieutenant Governor Cournoyer. The governor provides statewide leadership from the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines and supports public initiatives such as food assistance programs and task forces for national events.
The signing of these bills demonstrates ongoing efforts by state leadership to address legal gaps across multiple sectors impacting families, professionals involved with the judicial system, students seeking loan information, crime victims, as well as those working within healthcare fields.
