U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley announced on May 4 the release of the committee’s section of the Republican-led reconciliation bill, which aims to provide funding for federal law enforcement and border security through Fiscal Year 2029. The legislation would allocate resources to the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security.

The announcement comes after a recent shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, which lasted for 76 days. Grassley said this disruption affected law enforcement officers and their families by delaying paychecks. “Democrats set the wrong kind of record by shutting down DHS for a historic 76 days, forcing brave law enforcement officers and their families to miss multiple paychecks. Sadly, Democrats’ irresponsible DHS shutdown proved they’re still the party of open borders and ‘defund the police.’”

Grassley said that Republicans are committed to supporting law enforcement efforts nationwide. “Republicans won’t allow our country to be dragged backwards by Democrats’ radical, anti-law enforcement agenda. The Senate Judiciary Committee is taking action to help provide certainty for federal law enforcement and safer streets for American families. We will work to ensure this critical funding gets signed into law without unnecessary delay,” Grassley said.

According to the official website, Grassley has been married since 1954 and has five children. He earned degrees in political science from the University of Northern Iowa according to his official website. Grassley’s background includes assisting Iowans with issues involving federal agencies and whistleblowers according to his official website. He also brings experience as a former member of the Iowa state legislature and as a factory worker, having worked as a sheet metal shearer and assembly line worker according to his official website.

Grassley’s public service includes serving in the Iowa state legislature from 1958 until 1974 according to his official website. In addition, he is one of only two farmers currently serving in the U.S. Senate; he actively raises corn and soybeans in Butler County, Iowa according to his official website.

The proposed legislation seeks swift passage so that funds can reach federal agencies without further delay.
