The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation on Apr. 14 to rename the post office in Fort Madison, Iowa, after Martin L. Graber. The bill, H.R. 4707, was introduced by Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks and aims to honor Graber’s service to both Iowa and the nation.
The decision is intended to recognize Graber’s contributions as a member of the Iowa Army National Guard for more than three decades and his later work in the Iowa Legislature. Supporters say this move will help preserve his legacy for future generations.
“Martin Graber dedicated his life to serving our country and our community,” said Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks. “From his 32 years in the Iowa Army National Guard to his service in the Iowa State House, he embodied the very best of Iowa values—faith, family, and selfless service.”
Miller-Meeks added: “Renaming this post office is a small but lasting way to honor his legacy and ensure future generations remember his commitment to service. I’m proud to have led this effort alongside the Iowa delegation and his family.”
Iowa Representatives Ashley Hinson, Zach Nunn, and Randy Feenstra joined Miller-Meeks in leading this legislation.
Miller-Meeks has represented Iowa’s 1st district since replacing Dave Loebsack in 2021 according to Ballotpedia. She previously served in the Iowa Senate from 2019 until her election to Congress according to her official biography. Born in Herlong, California in 1955, Miller-Meeks currently resides in Le Claire as reported by Des Moines Register. She graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1976.
The legislation now moves forward for consideration by the Senate.
