The Iowa Department of Transportation announced on March 27 that reconstruction work on Iowa 9 from U.S. 52 to near Pleasant Avenue in Decorah will begin April 6, weather permitting.

According to the department’s New Hampton construction office, the initial phase will involve lane closures and the addition of temporary pavement. This phase is expected to be completed by late April.

After the first phase, traffic will shift to a head-to-head pattern in the westbound lanes while crews reconstruct the eastbound lanes. Once this is finished, vehicles will move to the new eastbound lanes so work can continue on the westbound side. Access to side streets from Iowa 9 will be limited to right-in and right-out movements. When staged side-road closures occur, drivers should follow marked detour routes. The department said access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout the project, which is expected to finish by late November.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reminds motorists that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones and urges drivers to use caution, obey posted speed limits and signs, stay alert, allow space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
