An Iowa City man, Jose Manuel Parsons, was sentenced on March 25 to seven years in federal prison for receipt of child pornography.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the justice system to address crimes involving the exploitation of children. The sentencing follows an investigation that began with a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
According to public court documents, authorities received a CyberTip about an account linked to Parsons, age 40, which had received and uploaded files containing child sexual abuse material. Law enforcement examined electronic devices seized during Parsons’ arrest as well as social media content showing communication with minors. Investigators found that Parsons had communicated with a minor in Michigan who sent him illegal material. It was also noted that Parsons worked for traveling carnival companies over multiple years, giving him access to children.
After serving his prison sentence, Parsons will be subject to a ten-year term of supervised release. There is no parole available in the federal system.
United States Attorney David C. Waterman of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The Iowa City Police Department conducted the investigation.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse through coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local agencies.
