More than 37,000 Iowa high school seniors will receive letters this week outlining their in-state postsecondary education options, application processes, and financial aid opportunities, according to a Mar. 13 announcement from Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education.
The initiative aims to ensure that all graduating seniors are aware of the pathways available at Iowa’s two- and four-year colleges and universities. The effort is designed to help students make informed decisions about their futures by providing actionable information on admissions and financial support.
“I am excited to launch Iowa’s new ‘Claim Your Future’ initiative to ensure every high school senior in Iowa has the opportunity to learn about the postsecondary pathways available to them in our state,” said Governor Kim Reynolds. “Through this initiative, we hope to help students feel more prepared for future success in high-demand, high-skill, and high-wage careers. We encourage students and families to check their mailboxes and watch for these letters to arrive!”
Each letter includes QR codes linking directly to applications for colleges, universities, federal student aid (FAFSA), and state scholarships or grants. The letters also explain how students can calculate a Regent Admission Index score for automatic admission into Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, or the University of Iowa depending on each university’s deadline. Information is also provided about community college admissions and private nonprofit institutions with guaranteed acceptance for those meeting academic benchmarks.
“The Department is proud to partner with every public and nonprofit institution of higher education across Iowa to empower all seniors with actionable information as they claim their future,” said McKenzie Snow, Director of the Iowa Department of Education. “More learners are attaining work-based learning experiences and college credit while in high school than ever before, and Iowa continues to support students and their families in navigating what comes next. Our ‘Claim Your Future’ initiative ensures Iowa graduates know their in-state college options and the application, admissions, and financial aid steps needed to finalize plans for their postsecondary education and future careers here in Iowa.”
The program is a collaboration between the Department of Education, the Board of Regents, 15 community colleges, and 31 private nonprofit colleges across the state. Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, these letters will be sent earlier in the fall semester so that students have more time during decision-making periods.
