Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced on Mar. 12 a statewide tree planting initiative in partnership with Iowa 4-H and Iowa FFA to mark the United States’ 250th birthday in 2026.

The initiative aims to plant 250 trees across Iowa, engaging young people in conservation efforts while celebrating the state’s agricultural heritage. Organizers say the project will connect students with stewardship values and encourage them to take an active role in caring for the land.

“Planting a tree is a simple act that benefits future generations,” said Secretary Naig. “Through this initiative, Iowa 4-Hers and FFA members have an opportunity to honor our nation’s history while strengthening their communities. I encourage chapters and clubs across the state to join us in celebrating this milestone moment in our nation’s history by planting an official A250 tree in their communities that will live on for generations.”

A kickoff event is scheduled at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on April 24, Arbor Day, where Naig will join youth from both organizations to plant a Burr Oak as the official Iowa America250 tree. Mitch Hoyer, Director and State 4-H Program Leader, said, “Iowa 4-H members have a long and proud history of service to communities and stewardship of natural resources. Participating in the Iowa America250 tree planting initiative is a way for 4-H clubs to practice the 4-H pledge and use their hands in larger service. We’re pleased to support this initiative and having 4-H clubs across Iowa partner with local leaders on community projects.” Scott Johnson, Executive Director of the Iowa FFA Association, added, “Iowa FFA members take pride in growing leaders, building communities, and strengthening agriculture. Through the Iowa America250 tree planting initiative, FFA chapters are putting those values into action by improving our environment and investing in the future of rural communities. Iowa FFA is proud to support this effort as part of our commitment to leadership, service, and sustainability.”

The project encourages clubs to host events or ceremonies on Arbor Day involving community members and share updates using #IowaAmerica250. The Coalition to Support Iowa Farmers (CSIF) sponsors the effort along with Frazier Nursery of Benton County; free regional delivery is available for trees ordered through Frazier Nursery until April 10 at www.Iowa250Trees.com.

The official website states that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship provides financial support through no-interest loans and grants for conservation practices such as stormwater management. The department also promotes social growth by enhancing rural areas and supporting agriculture for all residents according to its website. It champions farmers while safeguarding consumers and natural resources through various programs aimed at conservation according to its website. The department has shaped policy through initiatives like the Nutrient Reduction Strategy targeting nutrient runoff into waterways according to its website.

Iowa leads nationally as a producer of pork, corn, eggs, ethanol, and biodiesel according to its website. The department extends operations statewide supporting agriculture as well as land and water resources according to its website.
