Iowa State defeated Brigham Young University by a score of 14-10 on Apr. 16, marking its first-ever win in Provo. The Cyclones also set a new single-season school record for home runs during the game.
The victory is significant as it highlights Iowa State’s growing strength in softball and their ability to break previous records with games still remaining this season.
Entering the day with 62 home runs, Iowa State surpassed its previous record of 64 set in 2021 by hitting four more homers, bringing the total to 66 with at least twelve games left. Karlee Ford achieved her first career multi-home run game, while Kadence Shepherd and Reagan Bartholomew also contributed home runs as part of Iowa State’s fourteen hits during the afternoon.
Ford and Bartholomew each recorded three hits to lead the team, joined by Jessie Clemons who also had three hits. Ford finished with four runs batted in (RBI), while Bartholomew added three RBI. Sydney Malott and Isabelle Nosan both drew two walks each for Iowa State.
Lauren Schurman earned her fifteenth win of the season after pitching six innings for the Cyclones. She became the first Iowa State pitcher since Emma Hylen in 2019 to reach that milestone. Jaiden Ralston and Ava Mullen also pitched during the game.
For BYU, Lexie Bennett led with three hits while Hailey Shuler hit two home runs and collected four RBI. Gianna Mares started as pitcher for BYU but took the loss after allowing six runs over four-plus innings.
Looking ahead, Iowa State and BYU are scheduled to play again on April 17 at 7 p.m., with live streaming available on ESPN+.
