Jaidyn Coon, the 2026 Iowa Mr. Basketball, has signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Iowa men’s basketball program, head coach Ben McCollum announced on April 15.

Coon’s decision to join the Hawkeyes is significant for both the player and the university as he is considered one of the top prospects in his class. His commitment highlights Iowa’s continued effort to retain talented players from within the state.

“I chose the University of Iowa for several reasons,” Coon said. “I trust Coach McCollum and the direction he’s taking this program. After having multiple conversations with him and learning how I’d fit into their system – how their style of play would help develop me into an even better player – I knew this was what I was looking for and striving toward.

“The culture was incredible during my official visit. The players were down-to-earth and welcoming, and everything felt genuine. After spending time with the coaches, staff and team, I knew I wanted to be a Hawkeye.”

Coon is a four-star prospect ranked as the 116th player nationally in his class by 247Sports Composite and is considered third in Iowa among all players in his year. Head coach Ben McCollum said, “Jaidyn is a great fit for our program as we continue to build on the foundation we’ve established. His athleticism is off the charts, and he’s a valuable defensive player with the ability to guard four positions. It’s important for us to keep the top players in state, so we’re extremely excited Jaidyn is a Hawkeye.”

Coon becomes only the second consecutive Iowa Mr. Basketball honoree to join Iowa’s roster after Trevin Jirak joined following his award win in 2025. He also joins Ethan Harris from Camas, Washington—another four-star recruit—as part of Iowa’s recruiting class for 2026.

During his senior season at Storm Lake High School, Coon averaged 22 points per game along with over nine rebounds while leading his team to notable achievements including its first state tournament win since 1980.
