Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Congressman Eric Sorensen issued a joint statement on April 16 following the U.S. Army’s decision to cancel collective bargaining agreements with the American Federation of Government Employees.
The lawmakers said the move affects workers supporting the armed forces, specifically those at Rock Island Arsenal. In their statement, Miller-Meeks and Sorensen said, “The workers who support our armed forces should have the right to join a union and collectively bargain for fair wages and working conditions. We will continue to advocate for Rock Island Arsenal employees against this decision to end the Department of War’s collective bargaining agreements. We will once again be reaching out to the DoW to urge them to reconsider this action.”
Miller-Meeks is currently serving in Congress as Iowa’s representative for the 1st district, having replaced Dave Loebsack in 2021 according to publicly available biographical information. She has represented Iowa’s 1st District since 2021 after previously serving in the Iowa Senate from 2019 through 2021 as reported by multiple sources.
Born in Herlong, California in 1955, Miller-Meeks is now aged 67 and resides in Le Claire according to public records. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Christian University in 1976.
The broader impact of this decision may affect labor relations at military installations such as Rock Island Arsenal, where employee rights regarding union representation are now under review.
