Representative Zach Nunn announced on Apr. 24 a $1 million federal investment to support the expansion of the Youth & Shelter Services (YSS) Ember Recovery Campus in Cambridge, Iowa. The new funding will help increase recovery and workforce training services for young Iowans dealing with homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health challenges.
The investment is intended to provide more resources for adolescents and transition-age youth facing difficult circumstances. Supporters say that expanding the campus will give more young people access to integrated care and long-term stability.
Nunn said, “Every young Iowan deserves the chance to get back on their feet and build a future right here at home. This new investment strengthens Ember Recovery Campus’s ability to deliver comprehensive recovery services all under one roof, creating real pathways to stability, opportunity, and long-term success.”
The funds were secured through the FY2026 Community Project Funding process as part of Economic Development Initiatives. The second phase of expansion will add workforce training space, a wellness hub, expanded supportive housing units, and recreational facilities focused on recovery. Andrew Allen, YSS President & CEO said, “Ember Recovery Campus was our answer to the substance use crisis facing young people in Iowa. Phase 2 is building on that momentum, expanding into workforce development and community-based recovery, and creating a movement to help make central Iowa one of the best places in the country for young people to recover.”
Support for this project comes from local leaders including State Representative Brian Lohse who said: “Even from Washington D.C., Congressman Nunn has maintained his steadfast dedication to Iowa’s next generation… Thank you Congressman Nunn for your continued support of Iowa’s next generation!” Polk County Supervisor Mark Holm added: “Today’s announcement is a meaningful investment in young people and families across our region… We’re grateful for the collaboration that makes this possible.” Laura Jolly from Iowa State University also praised Nunn’s advocacy.
According to the official website, Nunn’s office is based in Des Moines serving residents across 21 counties within Iowa’s Third Congressional District which covers central and southern parts of the state. He prioritizes bipartisan policies supporting families and children while serving on both House Financial Services Committee and House Agriculture Committee according to his office. His office also offers constituent assistance with federal agencies according to official sources.
