University of Iowa track and field athlete Chioma Nwachukwu broke her own school record in the women’s 400 meters with a personal-best time of 51.24 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invite, according to an April 18 announcement from the university.
The updated record highlights ongoing improvements among Iowa’s track and field athletes as they prepare for upcoming championship competitions. Performances like Nwachukwu’s show the team’s competitive edge on a national stage.
Nwachukwu finished fifth in her event, while teammates Damaris Mutunga and Alivia Williams also posted top-20 finishes. Williams’ time of 52.67 now ranks ninth all-time at Iowa. Director of Iowa Track and Field Joey Woody said, “Chioma led the women today with another spectacular performance in the invite 400, finishing fifth overall and breaking the school record again. She is very close to breaking 51 seconds.” Woody also noted Nwachukwu’s anchor leg on the women’s 4×400-meter relay, where she ran a split of 50.23 seconds.
Jailya Ash won the collegiate women’s 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.29, which places her sixth all-time at Iowa. Freshman Isabel Evans finished ninth in that event with a personal best as well.
The women’s relay team consisting of Princess Uche, Mutunga, Williams, and Nwachukwu placed fourth in their race with a time of 3:29.33—the second-fastest mark ever for Iowa’s program. On the men’s side, Tyrese Miller, Zidane Brown, Prior Ochonogor and Landon Fontenot finished sixth in their relay event.
Woody said about Ash: “She’s been showing great things in practice and it all came together today.” He added praise for other athletes including Blake Nyenati, Jordan Gross, Jaylin Holmes and David Akhalu for their efforts in relays and individual sprints.
Elsewhere over the weekend at other meets such as Big Red Classic and Mt. SAC Relays, several Hawkeyes achieved top-10 finishes or set new personal records—including Duke Faley (discus), Will Davidson (hurdles), Caleb Levy (800 meters), Leanna Lewis (800 meters), Hayden Kuhn (5,000 meters) among others.
Woody concluded by saying: “Overall, the Hawkeyes had a great weekend across the country… It will be exciting to be back home this week to showcase our program at the Drake Relays.”
The team is scheduled to compete next at both Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Open beginning April 23.
