U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, Chair of the Senate Small Business Committee, announced on Apr. 20 that Sievert’s Furniture & Floors of Emmet County has been named her Small Business of the Week. Ernst said she plans to recognize a small business in each of Iowa’s 99 counties during the 119th Congress.
The recognition highlights local businesses and their contributions to Iowa communities. Ernst said, “For over 50 years, Sievert’s Furniture & Floors has been furnishing excellence by providing the Emmet County community with mattresses, recliners, flooring, and so much more.” She continued, “Doc and Judy grew Sievert’s from a small appliance business into a chair-ished furniture and flooring company that continues to give back to the folks in Estherville.”
Sievert’s Furniture & Floors began in 1970 when John Raymond ‘Doc’ Sievert and his wife Judy opened an appliance store out of their garage. Over time, they expanded into furniture and flooring offerings. In 2015, their son Jeff took over management while maintaining the family-centered approach established by his parents.
Ernst’s office provides assistance for Iowans dealing with federal agencies such as Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, immigration matters, and military affairs according to the official website. She served more than two decades in the Iowa Army National Guard and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel while commanding troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom according to the official website.
Ernst was raised on a family farm in Montgomery County where values like hard work were emphasized according to the official website. She became Iowa’s first woman elected to federal office upon joining Congress according to the official website, after earning degrees from Iowa State University and Columbus State University according to the official website.
The weekly recognition program will continue throughout this session as Ernst spotlights additional outstanding small businesses across Iowa.
