Senate Judiciary Committee advances ATF director nomination and anti-theft legislation

The Senate Judiciary Committee has moved forward with several key nominations and legislation. On March 5, 2026, the committee approved Robert Cekada as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with a 14-8 vote.

Judicial nominations included Andrew B. Davis for United States District Judge for the Western District of Texas, John Thomas Shepherd for United States District Judge for the Western District of Arkansas, Anna St. John for United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana, and Christopher R. Wolfe for United States District Judge for the Western District of Texas. Each judge nominee was advanced by a 12-10 vote.

Nominations for U.S. Marshal positions were also considered. Robert Rotter was approved as U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Iowa by a 15-7 vote; Daniel Satterlee was nominated as U.S. Marshal for the District of South Dakota with a 13-9 vote; and David St. Pierre was advanced as U.S. Marshal for the District of Maine by a 20-2 vote.

Additionally, the committee advanced by voice vote the bipartisan Safe Access to Cash Act of 2026, which is led by Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.). The bill aims to address ATM robberies.
