The U.S. Senate has unanimously approved the National STEM Week Act, a bipartisan bill led by Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa. The legislation is designed to promote science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills among students across the country in order to boost the United States’ competitiveness in innovation and technology.
Senator Ernst’s initiative aims to connect students with career pathways in industry sectors that rely on STEM expertise. This is intended to strengthen the connection between educational institutions and employment opportunities.
Last year, Senator Ernst held a roundtable discussion with representatives from the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), Kemin Industries, and Iowa 4-H. The group discussed how STEM education plays an important role in shaping the future workforce.
“STEM skills are key to fostering a growing and innovative economy, and I’m excited that my National STEM Week Act has passed the Senate to increase opportunities and experiences for students across our nation,” said Ernst. “Through this effort, I am proud to equip our students for successful careers and fostering the workforce of tomorrow. I look forward to seeing it signed into law.”
The National STEM Week Act includes several provisions: increasing student engagement through hands-on activities; enhancing collaboration with industry partners for real-world experience; encouraging family and community involvement; and supporting state efforts while providing a national framework for celebrating STEM achievements.
