Senator Joni Ernst, chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, highlighted the role of American entrepreneurs in shaping the nation during a committee hearing held on April 29. Ernst emphasized how innovators from Iowa and other states have contributed to national progress as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.

The senator said that recognizing this milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on America’s history of innovation and resilience. “Last summer, President Trump chose the great state of Iowa to kick off our nation’s 250th celebration,” Ernst said. “At the Iowa State Fairgrounds, he underscored Iowa’s unique role in the American story. And I would have to agree. Look no further than our Iowa State Fair, where the creativity and entrepreneurship of our small businesses and farmers are on full display! As we continue to strive to fulfill our founders’ promise of a more perfect union, I have no doubt America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs will continue leading the way.”

During her remarks, Ernst reflected on pivotal moments in American history driven by inventors and business leaders: “It is impossible to tell this story without the entrepreneurs and innovators who have driven the country forward, serving as the catalysts for freedom and prosperity.” She also cited examples from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and her home state of Iowa.

Ernst’s office assists Iowans with federal agency matters such as Social Security, Medicare, veterans benefits, immigration issues, and military affairs according to her official website. She served over two decades in the Iowa Army National Guard—including commanding troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom—and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel according to her official website.

Raised on a family farm in Montgomery County where values like hard work were emphasized according to her official website, Ernst became both the first woman from Iowa elected to federal office upon joining Congress according to her official website as well as an alumna with degrees from Iowa State University (bachelor’s) and Columbus State University (master’s) according to her official website.

Looking ahead at ongoing celebrations for America’s founding anniversary through organizations like America250—a bipartisan group established by Congress—Ernst concluded: “America’s 250th birthday is certainly cause for celebration and I am excited to hear about America250’s plans this July 4th.”
