Smith, Fortune finish 1-2 as Bees open with Short Course Invite

Adeline Smith and Rileigh Fortune helped St. Ambrose get its 2022 season off to a great start. Smith, a freshman, and Fortune, a sophomore, finished first and second, respectively at the season-opening Short Course Invite at Emeis Park in Davenport Saturday.

Smith ran the 4K event in 17:08.24 to win by more than 30 seconds. Fortune finished in 17:39.08. The two helped SAU outrun Scott Community College for the team title.

Megan Jansett gave the Bees three of the top five finishers. She was fifth in 18:57.65.

Jayne Eilderts (19:11.35), Allison Hein (19:45.66) and Loryn Heil (21:24.41) were sixth, seventh and eighth for St. Ambrose.

The Bees will host their annual Fighting Bee Invitational next Saturday at Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf. The women’s race is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
