CLINTON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: CCC Sharar Foundation receives donation from Iowa American Legion

Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Oct. 22

The Clinton Community College Paul B. Sharar Foundation has accepted a donation from the Iowa American Legion Foundation. The gift will fund scholarships for Veterans attending the college including tuition, fees and textbooks.

The American Legion of Iowa Foundation was organized as a mechanism for the Legion to provide financial assistance to promote Americanism, youth programs, veterans rehabilitation and community service in the state of Iowa.   Their service is an unseen battle against poverty, degenerative youth complacency and lack of patriotism.  The Iowa American Legion betters human life through scholarships, help to veterans, and other humanitarian causes through their awards to organizations such as the CCC Paul B. Sharar Foundation.

CCC President Dr. Karen Vickers commented, “The support from the American Legion touches the lives of our military students in very meaningful ways.  That support is important to them being able to continue their education at CCC.  We are most appreciative of the work of the Iowa American Legion Foundation and their support for our students.”

CCC was founded in 1946, with the first class of 86 students graduating in 1948.  Many of the first graduates were veterans who had served in World War II.  The Paul B. Sharar Foundation is named in honor of the first dean of Clinton Community College who had a vision of education as the way people learn to live more useful lives for themselves and for their fellow citizens so they feel the joy of accomplishment above and beyond the common-place that might have been.  Since 1984, nearly $3.5 million in Sharar Foundation scholarships has been awarded to 3,710 CCC students. These scholarships are funded with contributions from businesses, organizations and  individuals.  Scholarship guidelines are determined by the donor with an emphasis in an area of interest including financial need, academic achievement, program of study, geographic region, academic promise or no specific guidelines.
