Mount Mercy University issued the following announcement on Jan. 4
A cold-shooting Mount Mercy men's basketball team opened the new year on the road at Peru State in Heart of America Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bobcats, 79-73.
After leading, 43-38, at the break, Peru State scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to take a 51-40 advantage. The Bobcats led, 56-45, with 15:51 to go before 7-0 run by the Mustangs made it 56-52.
Peru State never got the lead back to double digits and Mount Mercy made it a one-point game, 74-73, on a DJ Johnson (JR/San Antonio, Texas) bucket with 38 seconds to go. The Bobcats answered with a 3-pointer to extend that lead to 77-73 and after a Mustang turnover, a pair of free throws by Nate Townsen Jr. sealed the win for Peru State (7-6, 6-2 Heart).
Dennis McKinney (JR/Chicago, Ill.) scored a game-high 20 points to lead Mount Mercy (7-7, 2-6 Heart). RoyShawn Webb (JR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had 15 points and six rebounds, Davion Watson (SR/Champaign, Ill.) 13 points. Bailey Basala (JR/Moline, Ill.) recorded a team-best nine boards and five assists.
Five Bobcats hit double figures, including Henry Tanksley with 19 points. Noah Vasa tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, Devon Colley 13 points, nine boards, and game-high eight assists. Townsen also finished with 13 points, Deonte McReynolds 12.
The Mustangs host Central Methodist (4-10, 3-5 Heart) in Heart of America action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids.
