The Iowa Utilities Board issued an order that approves the Dakota Access pipeline to double the amount of oil passing through Iowa.
A conversation that has been months in the making, Dakota Access needed the Iowa Utilities Board to amend the hazardous liquid pipeline permit. Thus paving the way for enhancements at its pump station in Cambridge, Iowa and allowing for an increase from 550,000 barrels per day up to 1.1 million barrels per day.
The underground pipeline moves oil between North Dakota and Illinois, passing through South Dakota and Iowa in the process. The $3.78 billion dollar pipeline has been a source of controversy for several years due to environmental concerns.
According to Dakota Access, there are no safety risks in doubling the amount of oil moving through the pipeline in Iowa. The recent amendment continues to receive objections from the Northwest Iowa Landowners Association, the Sierra Club and the Office of Consumer Advocate.
