COVID-19 outbreaks at meat processing plants continue to cause problems for Iowa farmers, as another facility is added to the list.
State public health officials confirmed another outbreak, this one at the Tyson pork processing plant in Storm Lake. The Quad-City Times reported the state public health department verified 555 of the facility's more than 2,500 employees have tested positive for COVID-19.
At least eight plants in Iowa have had confirmed outbreaks by the state, resulting in thousands of Iowans to become infected by the virus. The Iowa public health department only confirms such outbreaks if questioned by members of the media.
Gov. Kim Reynolds and state agriculture secretary Mike Naig used one of their public briefings to showcase the struggles, both physically and financially, Iowa farms are now facing because of the outbreaks at meat processing facilities. For example, some farms have more pigs than the processing plants need.
