Gov. Kim Reynolds' Office has announced that the United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue named Iowa County as a natural disaster zone.
Following the Consolidated Farm and Rural Development Act, seven counties were also named "contiguous natural disaster counties." The counties include Benton, Johnson, Keokuk, Linn, Powesheik, Tama and Washington.
Reynolds thanked President Donald Trump and the USDA for supporting farmers in the area.
“This designation by Secretary Perdue comes at a time when farmers are realizing the hard truth of the devastating derecho at the close of harvest,” Reynolds said in a press release. “I am so grateful to President Trump and USDA Secretary Perdue for their support for our farmers during this critical time. We will continue to work together to make additional resources available so that Iowans can rebuild their farms, livelihoods and communities.”
A disaster label makes primary counties eligible to be recognized for quick emergency assistance from the Farm Service Agency.
