The Iowa Hawkeyes field hockey team defeated Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2-1 on Oct. 1 at Bauer Track and Field.
This latest win is the Hawkeyes’ fourth consecutive victory, according to Hawkeye Sports.
“No. 1 Iowa field hockey team defeats No. 6 Rutgers 2-1 in New Jersey,” the HawFanatic wrote on Twitter.
Senior midfielder Nikki Freeman scored the first goal for the Hawkeyes at the 18:23 mark.
Iowa scored two goals in the span of 16 seconds.
The final score of the game was 2-1.
Rutgers’ goal broke a streak of eight consecutive shutouts for Iowa, scarlet knights.com reported.
“This was a hard-fought win,” Hawkeyes Head Coach Lisa Cellucci said in a release from Hawkeye Sports. “Rutgers is a fantastic team who put us under immense pressure, and I was so proud of the problem-solving we displayed each quarter. We had a focus on playing disciplined team defense. We will enjoy this tonight and then begin prepping for Maryland.”
The win prompted Iowa to 11-0 overall, making it the best start for the team since 1992, according to Hawkeye Sports.
The game marked the 10th time this season that the team has scored two or more goals, the release said.
The Hawkeyes went up against Central Michigan University on Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. CT at Mt. Pleasant in Michigan.
