Two companies have proposed separate underground carbon capture pipelines to run across the state of Iowa.
The Des Moines Register reported that Summit Carbon Solutions and Navigator CO2 Ventures have proposed the pipelines to move carbon dioxide from ethanol, fertilizer and other agricultural industrial plants in order for it to be sequestered deep underground in other states. Summit Carbon plans to sequester the captured carbon in North Dakota, and Navigator CO2 plans to move it to Illinois.
Public meetings are scheduled to discuss details about the project.
"Good article about one of two carbon capture pipelines proposed to wind across Iowa, with one running right through Linn County," Ann Gardner Dorr wrote in a Nov. 28 Facebook post. "There will be meetings to discuss this proposal in several counties in eastern Iowa in Dec. and Jan."
Critics argue that the that the pipelines could pose a potential risk through leaks and explosions, as well as potential damage to farmland. In February of 2020, a similar pipeline in Mississippi fractured, causing a leak of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide which sickened nearby motorists local residents, the Clarion-Ledger reported.
