Infections from COVID-19 are on the rise despite 59% vaccination rate | Adobe Stock
The omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to spread rapidly in Iowa even amidst the positive news of increased vaccination rates in the state.
As of Jan. 3, the seven-day positivity rate in Iowa has increased by 37%, marking an uptick from 12,952 to 17,773. This new data is the first available of 2022 in Iowa, according to a report from KCCI. New information on Iowa is released every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
"Infections of COVID-19 are on the rise due to the highly contagious omicron variant," the Iowa Department of Public Health said in a post to its official Twitter account Jan. 3. "All eligible Iowans should get vaccinated and a booster to prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. Find providers: http://vaccinate.iowa.gov and http://vaccines.gov."
There was a comparatively smaller uptick in patients with the coronavirus in hospitals during the same time period, going up from 773 to 768. As of Jan. 3, 59.2% of the population in Iowa have had all the doses of a vaccination against the coronavirus. Also as of Jan. 3, 4,624,085 vaccines against the coronavirus have been given out in total in Iowa.
Despite Iowa's vaccination percentage increasing, the state continues to rank 25th in the nation in vaccination percentage, exactly in the middle, according to a report from KCCI.
