Nighttime closures planned for I-35 between Elkhart and Ames starting August

Interstate 35 between Elkhart and Ames will experience nighttime closures starting August 4. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that I-35 will be closed from NE 126th Avenue to U.S. 30 for two nights. The first closure is scheduled from 9 p.m. on Monday, August 4, until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5. The second closure will occur from 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, weather permitting.

These closures are necessary for crews to set beams across I-35 for the new Iowa 210 bridge. During the closures, drivers will follow a marked detour using NE 126th Avenue, U.S. 69, and U.S. 30. Detour routes may change during the construction season.

The Iowa DOT advises motorists to check current detour information at 511ia.org before traveling through the construction zone and to pay attention to detour signs and message boards while driving.

"The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area," said an official statement from the department. "Traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones."

Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, maintain ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts in all work zones.
