In Sioux City, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has urged the public to avoid using the closed bike trail adjacent to Interstate 29. The trail, which leads to Riverside Park, was shut down following last year's severe flooding and is currently undergoing repairs. This project includes work on the pavement foundations and riverbank along the Big Sioux River.
The DOT's District 3 office highlighted safety concerns as bike riders have been spotted on the closed sections of the trail. The presence of bank slides and heavy equipment makes it a hazardous area. Trespassing on this closed portion could lead to significant penalties, including up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Construction is anticipated to conclude in about two months, weather permitting. Updates on the project's progress can be accessed via the Iowa DOT’s website at 511ia.org.
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution while driving through work zones by adhering to speed limits and posted signs. Traffic fines for violations in these areas are doubled. Drivers should remain vigilant, maintain safe distances between vehicles, and use seat belts.
