The Iowa Department of Transportation is set to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Iowa 3 bridge over the Little Sioux River in Cherokee. The event marks the completion and opening of the bridge, which was prioritized due to impacts from the historic flood event in 2024. This project involved replacing the bridge, adding an overflow structure, and making roadway improvements.
"The project was advanced a year in response to the 2024 historic flood event’s impacts to the traveling public," according to a statement from the Iowa DOT. The department emphasized that this development on Iowa 3 highlights its commitment to long-term resiliency and efficiency. The new infrastructure aims to maintain connectivity across northwest Iowa during future floods.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 1 p.m., starting at the Iowa DOT Cherokee RCE Office located at 1833 Industrial Road N, Cherokee, Iowa. Following a program at this location, there will be a brief ribbon-cutting at the project site. For safety reasons, attendees will park at the RCE office and be transported between locations.
Representatives from the Iowa DOT, local officials, and project partners are expected to attend. For more information about this event, Sarah Tracy, District 3 transportation planner, can be contacted at 712-274-5831 or sarah.tracy@iowadot.us.
