The Iowa Department of Transportation has announced the reopening of the Iowa 3 bridge over the Little Sioux River in Cherokee. This development comes after the project was expedited by a year due to the impact of a historic flood event in 2024, which affected travel in the area.

The project involved replacing the bridge, adding an overflow structure, and making improvements to the roadway. According to the Iowa DOT's District 3 office, these enhancements are part of a broader strategy focused on resilience and efficiency, aiming to maintain connectivity in northwest Iowa during future floods.

"The new structures will ensure continuity and connectivity throughout the northwest Iowa region during future flooding events," said a representative from the Iowa DOT. The department expressed gratitude to travelers for their patience during construction.

Motorists are reminded by the Iowa DOT to drive cautiously, adhere to speed limits and posted signs in work zones, where traffic fines for violations are doubled. Drivers should remain alert, keep safe distances between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
