Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has directed that all state flags remain at half-staff on Thursday, November 13, 2025, to honor former State Senator and Iowa Board of Regents member Larry McKibben. McKibben, who was from Marshalltown, served in the Iowa Senate between 1997 and 2010 and later joined the Iowa Board of Regents in 2013, serving until 2019. He died on November 9, 2025, after a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Governor Reynolds reflected on McKibben’s contributions and character: “Larry McKibben was a kind and good man and was loved by all who knew him. I had the privilege of working briefly alongside Larry in the Iowa State Senate and later got to know him well while he served on the Board of Regents,” said Governor Reynolds. “Kevin and I offer our condolences and prayers to his family during this time. He will be deeply missed.”
Currently, flags across the state are already at half-staff in recognition of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who died on November 3, 2025. Flags will continue to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Cheney's interment, scheduled for November 20, 2025.
The governor also encouraged individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions to fly flags at half-staff as a mark of respect for both McKibben and Cheney.
