The Iowa Department of Transportation announced on April 21 that a traffic pattern change will begin April 27 as part of the ongoing Iowa 9 reconstruction project in Decorah.
Currently, traffic is traveling on the inside lanes in each direction of Iowa 9 between U.S. 52 and near Pleasant Avenue. Beginning Monday, weather permitting, traffic will be shifted into a head-to-head pattern in the westbound lanes so that reconstruction can begin on the eastbound lanes, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.
Once work on the eastbound lanes is completed, traffic will be moved from the westbound lanes and placed into a head-to-head pattern on the newly reconstructed eastbound lanes. The same process will then take place for reconstructing the westbound lanes. Access to side streets from Iowa 9 will be limited to right-in and right-out turns only during this phase. When staged side road closures are necessary, the City of Decorah will provide marked detour routes. Access to businesses and residences along Iowa 9 will be maintained throughout the project, which is expected to conclude by late November.
The department reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limits and signs in work areas, and notes that fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. Drivers are also encouraged to stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts at all times.
For more information about traveler updates or alerts related to this project, residents can use the DOT’s 511 system online or via phone. Further details about this project are available through the organization’s press release.
