The Iowa Department of Transportation announced on April 17 that a section of U.S. 34, located 0.3 miles west of Iowa 5 in Albia to 0.3 miles east of 550th Avenue, will be closed to traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, April 27, for a concrete pavement overlay project.
The closure is expected to last until the end of August, weather permitting, according to the department’s Chariton construction office. During this period, motorists will be detoured around the work zone using Iowa 5, Iowa 92, and Iowa 14.
The department reminds drivers to exercise caution in the area and obey posted speed limits and signage. “The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts,” according to the announcement.
Travelers can access updated information through the department’s 511 system by visiting 511ia.org; calling 511 within Iowa or (800) 288-1047 nationwide; following on Facebook or X; or downloading the free app for mobile devices.
