Mount Mercy University issued the following announcement on Dec. 19
On Wednesday night, the Mustangs traveled to battle the Warriors of Waldorf University in a non-conference contest. Thanks to a night of sharp shooting from the field, the Mustangs charged past the Warriors to a 96-83 victory. The Mustangs move to 4-8 on the season.
To begin the game, the Mustang struck first from distance as Sandra Mia (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) fired back-to-back three-pointers. The Warriors kept pace with the sharp-shooting Mustangs thanks to a number of baskets from downtown. The Warriors were six of eight from distance in the first quarter to lead by as much as nine. To start the second quarter, the Mustangs went on a 14-0 run to take a 48-38 lead into halftime. Sofia Popp (FR/Saint Peters, Mo.) and Brianna Thomas (SR/Mesquite, Texas) combined for three-straight buckets from downtown out of the locker rooms. With just over three minutes to go in the third quarter, a field goal by Mia gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the game at 22 points. Despite a late 8-0 run from the Warriors in the fourth quarter, the Mustang successfully held on to snag their second-straight win.
As a team, the Mustangs shot a season-best 52.2% (36-69) from the field and 52.2% (12-23) from beyond the arc. At the line, the Mustangs made 12 of 20 (60%) free throws. The Mustangs pulled down 33 total rebounds, including 13 offensive rebounds. Individually, Thomas scored a season-high 21 points. Mia followed with a season-high 19 while Popp added 16 going 4-for-7 from long range. On the boards, Mia led with seven rebounds. Popp and Cabalis each dished out three of the Mustangs' season-high 17 assists. Mia collected three steals. Taseandra Parker (SR/Aurora, Ill.) recorded the lone Mustang block on the night.
The Mustangs will enjoy the holiday break and return to Heart of America Athletic Conference action on Saturday, January 4 at 12:00 P.M. against Peru State College in Peru, Neb.
