MOUNT MERCY UNIVERSITY: Mustangs all on buzzer-Beater

Sports2

Mount Mercy University issued the following announcement on Feb. 19

Mason Vires buried his third three-pointer of the night as time expired, giving Culver-Stockton a 94-92 victory over the Mount Mercy men's basketball team and hurting the Mustangs' chances of earning a postseason berth in the Heart of America Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament.

Seconds earlier, Davion Watson (SR/Champaign, Ill.) put the Mustangs in position to win, knocking down a pair of free throws to give Mount Mercy a 92-91 lead with five seconds left. Vires inbounded the ball, then got it back on the run and dribbled to the three-point line in front of the Culver-Stockton bench where he calmly swished the trey over two Mustang defenders.

Mount Mercy only committed nine turnovers, but cold shooting beyond the arc didn't help the Mustangs (13-14, 8-13 Heart), who finished 6-of-23 (26.1%) from three-point range. Mount Mercy ended up shooting 45.6 percent from the field overall, including 50 percent in the second half, and was 24-of-31 at the free throw line for 77.4 percent.

RoyShawn Webb (JR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was one of five Mustangs in double figures, posting a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Watson ended up 11-of-12 from the free throw line while totaling 19 points and five boards. Streeter McIlravy (JR/Solon, Iowa) made four of Mount Mercy's six treys to finish with 12 points. Dennis McKinney (JR/Chicago, Ill.) had 11 points and six rebounds before fouling out. Davarea Loggins (SR/Davenport, Iowa) chipped in 10 points.

All five starters hit double digits for the Wildcats (5-21, 4-18 Heart), led by Vires' 24 points. He also grabbed four steals. Michael Johnson added 23 points and three blocked shots. Jim King and Thaddeus Newby both had double-doubles, King with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Newby totaling 10 points and 10 boards to go along with five assists. Ray Adams threw in 14 points.

Mount Mercy needs to win their final three games to have a chance at the eighth and final spot in the Heart's postseason tournament. The Mustangs have two of those three at home, beginning with Saturday's matchup with Peru State (15-12, 14-7 Heart) at 2:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center.
