The unemployment rate for Iowa is making its way to lower numbers despite the ongoing impact of COVID-19, according to Iowa Workforce Development.
The rate saw a dip to 10% in May.
“Given Iowa did not begin to reopen until May, it is not surprising that the unemployment rate remains at 10%," Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend said on the organization’s website. "There are signs, however, that more people are returning to work as we see the total number of claims decline each week.”
The unemployment rate this time last year was 2.7%. The nation also saw a decline in unemployment as it lowered to 13.3%.
“Moving forward, we are looking at the numbers of initial and continuing claims to determine the shape and speed of our recovery," Townsend said, according to the workforce website.
She said that there are more than 50,000 job openings on the IowaWORKS site. Those on the search for a new job can see those here.
