'Grand Jury declined to return an indictment' in Iowa police shooting

No indictment was made by an Iowa court in a lethal police shooting in Chelsea, Iowa, on Oct. 28, 2021. A citizen brandished a weapon before he was shot and killed while police were responding to a call. 

Tama County Sheriff's Office got calls of shots being fired Oct. 28, 2021. 

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said in a news release that “the Grand Jury declined to return an indictment.”

Dewey Dale Wilfong III was walking around while holding a handgun when the police arrived at the scene.  A standoff with police escalated and Wilfong fired shots from his firearm. The incident occurred at approximately 7:27 p.m. on that night. 

The incident took place1001 Station Street in Chelsea, Iowa. Various law enforcement groups responded to the initial call. Wilfong was shot in the chest and killed by an officer. 

The Grand Jury declined to return an indictment on Jan. 17 following an investigation.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety carried out the investigation against the officer that eventually resulted in no indictment. Richard Rahn was the "special agent in charge" of the investigation. The Iowa Department of Public Safety has six divisions and is the largest law enforcement group in Iowa.
