Iowa City rates of gun violence dropped in 2021, numbers still remain relatively high

Iowa City reported a decrease in the number of gun related incidents for 2021.

The number of shots fired incidents decreased from 57 in 2020 to 37 in 2021, according to a release from the city of Iowa City. The total number of shots fired also decreased from 303 in 2020 to 224 in 2021. Iowa City police also seized 131 firearms in 2021.

"The impacts of gun violence have been felt throughout our entire community in recent years," Iowa City Police Chief Dustin Liston said, according to the release. "The police department is committed to working with the community on proactive measures to reduce gun violence."

The numbers for 2021 are still significantly higher than 2019 numbers which report 15 shots fired and 56 total number of shots fired.

In 2021, 17 Iowa City residents were struck by gunfire, leading to three homicides. The Iowa City Police Department investigated 37 shooting incidents which resulted in 26 arrests with further incidents still under current investigation.
