A man from Sioux City has pleaded guilty to escaping custody, as confirmed by federal court proceedings on June 30, 2025. Curtis Koesters, aged 45, admitted his guilt during a plea hearing in Sioux City, Iowa.

Koesters had been under pre-release confinement at the Dismas Charities Residential Reentry Center in Sioux City since October 2024. This followed a previous conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. On November 4, 2024, he failed to return to the center after leaving for job-seeking purposes. He was subsequently apprehended in Woodbury County, Iowa, in December 2024 and faced multiple traffic-related charges.

United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand will schedule sentencing after completing a presentence report. Until then, Koesters remains under the custody of the United States Marshal. He could face up to five years of imprisonment, alongside a $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release post-incarceration. The federal system does not offer parole.
