A Davenport resident, David Anthony Tumea, 44, has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography while on federal supervised release. The sentencing follows the discovery of multiple storage devices containing child sexual abuse material.
Court documents show that Tumea was living at a residential reentry center as part of his supervised release after a 2014 conviction for possessing an unregistered firearm and ammunition as a felon. Staff at the facility found four flash drives hidden in Tumea’s hat when he entered the building. Subsequent searches of his vehicle and room led to the seizure of additional storage devices and a cell phone. In total, authorities confiscated 27 devices from Tumea, with several found to contain illegal material.
Tumea will also serve a ten-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment. Federal law does not allow parole. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution.
His previous supervised release was revoked due to these new offenses, resulting in an additional sentence of 18 months imprisonment, which will be served consecutively to the initial 87-month sentence.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal for the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The Scott County Sheriff's Office conducted the investigation.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse by coordinating efforts among federal, state, and local agencies.
