The chief executive officer of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics reported that the openings for people in nursing, nursing assistance, food service, housekeeping and maintenance are in the hundreds due to people leaving the industry because of COVID-19, according to Siouxland Proud.
"US public health workers leaving ‘in droves’ amid pandemic burnout caused by #UnvaccinatedAssholes that are clogging up hospitals," Twitter user Ed Hull said in a tweet that shared a news article from The Guardian on the subject.
The University of Iowa hospital is the largest hospital in the state of Iowa, according to Siouxland Proud.
Hospitals that cannot handle the additional patient load brought on by COVID-19 transfer them to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, according to the Associoated Press.
COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state jumped by more than 10% over the past week, to 638, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Associated Press.
That's the highest number since December 2020, according to U.S. News and World Report. Additionally, the agency reported 81 additional deaths, bringing the state's COVID-19 death toll to 6,482, according to the Associated Press.
