It feels good to win especially at the expense of a rival, but for P. Sue Beckwith, MD, Iowa Women’s Basketball Head Coach Lisa Bluder, her program’s 88-61 victory over Michigan State on Dec. 5 was extra special.
By vanquishing the Spartans, the Hawkeyes gave Bluder her career 800th win, fan blog Swish Appeal reported.
“It’s special being on your home court, obviously, but being able to share that with your family and the women on this team is just so much fun,” Bluder said in a university issued press release.
The Hawkeyes rolled towards that milestone victory behind sophomore Caitlin Clark, who registered her second season and third career triple-double with 24 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.
Junior McKenna Warnock enjoyed a perfect shooting night — 4-for-4 from the field, 1-for-1 from the three-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line — that translated into 21 points, while senior Monika Czinano added 19 points.
Bluder is the fifth head coach and the 14th overall Division I women’s head coach to achieve the rare milestone, according to the school.
“I said to the team, Iowa basketball is back,” she said in the release.
As of this writing, Bluder and the No. 14 Hawkeyes were preparing for their Dec. 18 matchup against UCF.
