Iowa governor extends harvest proclamation allowing heavier farm transport loads

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds will extend a proclamation that affects the transportation of agricultural products and materials across the state. The extension, which will be signed by Governor Reynolds, takes effect on Saturday, October 18, 2025, and will remain in place until November 17, 2025.

The proclamation permits vehicles carrying items such as corn, soybeans, soybean meal, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer in various forms (dry, liquid, gas), and manure (both dry and liquid) to operate above standard weight limits. These vehicles can carry loads up to a gross weight of 90,000 pounds without needing a special permit during the period covered by the proclamation.

The order applies to all highways within Iowa except for the interstate system. To qualify under this extension, transported loads must not exceed a gross weight of 90,000 pounds. Additionally, they cannot surpass the maximum axle weight limit set in Iowa Code § 321.463 (6) (b) for non-primary highways by more than 12.5 percent. The legal maximum axle weight limit remains at 20,000 pounds. All vehicles must also comply with posted restrictions on roads and bridges.

Governor Reynolds’ extension aims to support agricultural operations during harvest season by easing transportation regulations within these specified parameters.
