With 32 games under their belt as of Jan. 14, the expansion Iowa Heartlanders skate into the midseason with an 11-17 record and a few milestones.
Iowa emerged out of its three-game series against the Rapid City Rush earlier this month bolstered by a two-game winning streak, which included its first overtime win and highest-scoring matchup.
The team’s website reported that the nine goals tallied at the Rush’s expense on Jan. 9 at The Monument was the most scored in the inaugural season so far.
Jake Smith generated the first hat trick in Heartlanders history and multiple goals from Jack Billings and Cole Stallard steered Iowa to a 9-1 road win over Rapid City.
"The dog days are here, and it's time to make some hay," head coach Gary Fleming said in an interview with David Fine on In the Heartland that was tweeted by MC22.
The Heartlanders grinded out their first overtime win Jan. 8, downing the Rush 4-3.
Bryce Misley delivered the game-winning goal with assists from Carter Shinkaruk and Ryan Kuffner, according to the team’s website.
It has been more than a year since the ECHL Board of Governors gave its blessing for the Heartlanders to join the league for the 2021-2022 season.
As of this writing, Iowa was slated for a home tilt against the Kansas City Mavericks.
