Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has directed that all flags in the state be flown at half-staff to honor former Vice President Dick Cheney, who died at age 84. Cheney served as Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush. His career also included roles in Congress and as Secretary of Defense.
“Dick Cheney will be remembered as a remarkable statesman—in Congress and the Executive Branch, in times of peace and war, at home and abroad,” Gov. Reynolds said. “Above all, he will be remembered as a patriot, who dedicated his life to the service of his country. Kevin and I offer our sincere condolences and prayers to his family. May he rest in peace.”
Flags are being lowered immediately and will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment. The order applies to the State Capitol Building, flag displays within the Capitol Complex, and all public buildings, grounds, and facilities across Iowa.
Governor Reynolds is encouraging individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions throughout Iowa to also lower their flags for the same period as a mark of respect.
